About Global Youth Sevens

Who we are

Since 2016, the Global Youth Sevens (formerly the World School Sevens) has  held annual international U18 Sevens Rugby tournaments at Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. The comp has featured over 100 national sides including USA, Canada, Wales, Japan, Fiji, Australia, Samoa, Nauru and New Zealand. We’ve also hosted many representative and composite teams including NZ Tongans, NZ Fijians, NZ Samoans, Cook Islands NZ and NZ Niue.

The purpose of the tournament is to deliver a high level professional event that’s both an entertaining spectacle, and a platform for players to showcase their talents on the world stage.

That’s why Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby decided to work together to provide a high performance competition, above domestic tournaments with adequate funding and global reach.

What we stand for

This elite environment attracts national coaches and talent ID staff who can form pathways opportunities for young aspiring players and help grow the game of Sevens rugby. Over 40 players from 8 nations have gone on to higher honours including Hoskins Sotutu and Emoni Narawa to the All Blacks, as well as Jorja Miller & Jazmin Felix-Hotham to the Black Ferns 7’s.

The multiday event includes a cultural evening, community engagement opportunities, an official Māori welcome by the local Iwi a round of warm up games and dozens of tournament matches, culminating in a grand final. Global Youth Sevens is supported by Next Generation Sport, a leading sports marketing and event company that has been involved in Sevens rugby for over 20 years.

They’ve been a sponsorship agent for the NZ HSBC Sevens World series for 12 years and has run the New Zealand National School Condor Sevens for eight years, growing it from 16 to 100 teams. Next Generation Sport has a vision to grow youth Sevens globally, by adding more tournaments across the world and developing it into a worldwide series.
